DAMn good idea Blizz, we use these at work and they work WONDERS!!!

http://www.wowinsider.com/2008/06/26/blizzard-authenticator-to-be-introduced-at-the-worldwide-invitat/

The problem with keyloggers and other methods of account theft has been well documented here at WoW Insider, and it seems like a constant problem. Even the most conscientious of players has fallen prey to it. However, at the Worldwide Invitational, Blizzard is introducing a little piece of hardware that could make those problems vanish. Say hello to the Blizzard Authenticator.

The Authenticator is a small piece of hardware that you can associate with your World of Warcraft account. Once the Authenticator is associated with the account, you will need it to log on. Every time you log on, you press a button on the Authenticator to generate a six-digit code that you must input to log on. Since only you know the code, and it's generated apart from your computer at the time you're ready to log on, it will be safe from trojans, keyloggers, and other hacks.

The Authenticator will be available at the WWI to start, then eventually at the Blizzard Store. The starting price being quoted by Blizzard is $6.50 -- a small price to pay for safety from a ransacked bank and naked server transferred characters, for many.

Is this the big announcement though? It's possible, of course, but we like to think there's more in store at the WWI. Stay tuned here, and we'll let you know.

If you don't understand what they are talking about post here and I'll try to describe it a little better.

While I think it's great, the fact that you have to pay for it is bullshit.

Well, it is optional. No one really has to pay for it. If you are careful and follow a few precautions, it's not needed.

Hmm Interesting. Funny they don't show any prototype shots of this piece of magical hardware.

Seems like it would work for keyloggers and what not but software still moves the information somewhere. Bring on the WOW Specific account attacks!!!

Geist it actually would not work for keyloggers because if they are going to use the same system we use at work it will work great. What we use is a rotating password. You get a little calculator like device and that you type in a pin number. Then that device will give you what the current numeric password is. You would type that password into WoW to login. If a keylogger picked up those key strokes it would not matter as they would not work except that first login. Thats the most simplistic way to describe it.

Its not even connected to the computer. its a Fob with a button and an LCD screen. it has a set of passwords (number combos) based off the chip settings and what-not.

Once a code is used it is invalid, but there is umpteen-million combinations, assuming they make 1 Million of these things, and the codes are 6 digits long. every 10 they build a new algorithm each with X amounts of codes, and start each at a interval of 200k. Not gonna get near figuring it out for everyone, since its based off the code(serial, however they set them up to your account) on the fob itself.

Unless you attack the person and steal their wow-fob, you got nothing... you lose your wow-fob your fucked.

the best part about that is that after he spilled himself before you with his "someone who..." speech, you probably still like, "Wait... so who is this?" XD

That would have been awesome.

Alrighty then, I have ordered one of these. Let me put it out to the group then as to what ad software/antivirus you find good as well. The reason i ask is i got hacked twice in 2 weeks, very very frustrating when i run ad aware and avast daily. I had no new or vague addons either. So what do you use in addition?
